A free encyclopedia of first names and surnames, powered by official INSEE data.
Our mission
Nomagora is an online encyclopedia of first names and surnames in France. The site provides free access to statistics for each name: number of births, year-by-year popularity, distribution by department, trends.
All displayed data comes from the public files of INSEE (the French National Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies). These are France's civil registry records, accessible to everyone on data.gouv.fr.
The site is free, requires no registration and is available in four languages: French, English, Spanish and Portuguese. It covers over 20,000 first names and 800,000 surnames.
Our data sources
Nomagora relies on public and verifiable sources. No data is fabricated or estimated.
INSEE — Civil registry
The first name file and the surname file published by INSEE form the foundation of Nomagora. These files cover births registered in France since 1900.
data.gouv.fr
The French open data platform hosts the INSEE files we use. All datasets are freely downloadable and redistributable.
Wikidata
Additional information (etymology, international equivalents, patron saints) comes from Wikidata, the free and collaborative knowledge base.
The project
Nomagora is an independent project. It is developed and maintained autonomously, with no affiliation to INSEE or any public body. The goal is to make French civil registry data more accessible and readable for the general public.
